As the world-renowned Zimbabwean imbube masters Black Umfolosi were performing at Toronto’s Lula Lounge, a crowd of stricken Zimbabweans was gathering in another part of the city for a less pleasant moment. As word spread of the passing away of Tawanda  Matindike, scores of mourners made their way to the Lawrence and Yonge area to pay their respects. Some came from as far as the United States.

27-year-old Matindike died in as yet unexplained circumstances sometime last week. A friend of the deceased was informed by police on Friday. Police could not give any information on the circumstances of his death because the deceased has no known family member in Canada.

Sources say police might release the information soon after Bradfield Chinengo was given the go-ahead to seek power of attorney by Matindike’s mother in Zimbabwe early Saturday.

An email sent to zimcanada.com confirmed that Chinengo was asked by the Matindike family to act on their behalf.

Tawanda is the elder son of the late author of the Nhaka Youpenyu series of school textbooks,Gabriel Matindike. The Renco Mine-bred music basketball and Liverpool fanatic would have turned 28 on May 14.

Sources say at least $15,000 is required to fly Matindike’s body to Zimbabwe for burial. Well-wishers can deposit funds into a TD Canada Trust account – a/c name Bradfield Chinengo A/c No 06136307686, Branch 1928, Address 22 Yonge Street, Toronto, Swift code-TDO MCA TTTOR.
